Xinyang Mao Jian Ea Tea Introduction

Xinyang Mao Jian Ea (also known as Green Tip or Tippy Green) is one of the most famous and most popular Chinese green teas in the world, dating all the way back to 300 AD. As the name implies, this tea is produced in the Xinyang region and is harvested in either spring or fall. Early spring tea is considered to be the best quality Xinyang Mao Jian Ea. The “Mao Jian” in the name translates as “fur tips”. That name comes from the appearance of the leaves which are covered in white hairs.

The brewing process for Xinyang Mao Jian Ea is really simple and quite enjoyable which completes the tea drinking experience. What you’ll notice first when trying out Xinyang Mao Jian tea is the shape and colors of the leaves that is a mix of dark and light green with splashes of white and yellow. When steeped, the leaves turn soft and their color is significantly lighter. The smoky and slightly herbal fragrance will start filling up the room as soon as the brewing process begins. Upon first taste of Xinyang Mao Jian Ea tea, you will notice the familiar green tea notes with sweet and smoky undertones. This tea is very mild and has a delicate taste which is not overpowering. If you are a morning tea drinker, Xinyang Mao Jian Ea is a great choice, but you can also drink it throughout the day. If you wish to quit coffee, green teas are a great alternative because they also contain some caffeine but are not as harmful to your body. Xinyang Mao Jian Ea contains less than 10% of caffeine so it is safe to drink even at night because it will not keep you awake.

Xinyang Mao Jian Ea is considered to be a very rare and gourmet green tea because the process of making it very meticulous and over 50 thousand buds are needed in order to make only 500 grams of Mao Jian tea. Because of that, there are also fake Mao Jian teas that are inferior in quality. When buying this green tea make sure that it comes from Xinyang region and that it has been processed in a traditional way.

The History of Xinyang Mao Jian Ea Tea

Delicious green tea
Recognizing the history and origins of each tea definitely make us even more captivated by the tea we’re drinking. Those histories are always interesting and often include legends and myths. This fascinating green tea has a 2000 year old history and belongs to the list of top 10 best Chinese teas. Because it has such a long history, it is a part of many Chinese legends.

One tells a story about Xinyang, where this tea is produced. Apparently, the Xinyang region was struck by a horrible disease that left all the villagers very sick. No medicine seemed to cure it and people were in great danger of dying. A young girl from the village was determined to find a cure and save everybody. She searched until she stumbled upon a very old man. The mysterious man told her that she needs to cross 99 mountains in order to find a special plant that will save her village. She trekked over the mountains and finally got to the tree, but she was so exhausted and could not walk back to the village. The good guardian of the plant felt sorry for her and turned her into a small bird which enabled her to carry the seeds and the leaves of the plant back home. The sick villagers drank the tea made from the special leaves and all were cured. They decided to plant the seeds and soon they had a big garden. According to Chinese folklore, this is how Xinyang Mao Jian Ea tea was discovered.

How is Xinyang Mao Jian Ea Tea Made?

Xinyang is famous for tea plants that grow at high altitude with all four seasons changing. This particular location produces the highest quality Mao Jian green tea leaves. They are handpicked in spring and fall, but the best tea comes from the leaves that are harvested before the middle of April. The fresh green leaves first go through a process of pan frying which is done only by the most skilled villagers. The second stage is rolling and then the leaves are dried again. Now they can be packaged and stored. There are some tea producers that try to mimic this process while using lower quality leaves and sell it as genuine Mao Jian tea. The way to recognize this fake tea is by the black color of the leaves with no light tips and a particularly bland and lifeless flavor.

How To Brew Green Tea?

For the best tasting green tea, we recommend you use 2 grams of tea leaves per 6 ounces of water. If you like stronger tea, feel free to add more.

- The optimum water temperature for green tea is 160 - 170* F (70 - 80* Celsius).

- Please note that green tea leaves expand and release their flavors, so a bigger cup or strainer is recommended. Please avoid strainers and cups made of plastic materials.

- After you have boiled water and added tea leaves, let it sit in the cup / kettle for 60 seconds, then taste every 30 seconds until you find your favorite taste combination.

I was looking for an organic version of the Tippy Green tea I always get at my local Chinese restaurant when I stumbled across this. I wasn’t sure about ordering it since I’ve never been to AiryTea.com before, but I ordered it anyway and wow! I’m so happy with this purchase. A super reasonable price for the quality and quantity of the tea that you get and great customer service too. Not to mention the tea tastes delicious! It’s got a really full body and a sweet, smoky aroma that my roommate I just can’t get enough of! Do yourself a favor and buy some! (Posted on 8/22/2015)
