Huangshan Maofeng Tea Introduction

Originating from Anhui province, Huangshan Maofeng (also known as the Yellow Mountain Fur Peak) is one of the most famous green teas in China. Instead of picking all leaves and buds, farmers who grow Huangshan Maofeng only pick leaves that are next to the newly formed tea buds. That process creates a unique tasting tea that will instantly win you over.

Before we get into the flavor and fragrance of Huangshan Maofeng tea, it is important to first acknowledge its unique shape. Because the leaves are picked very early, they are covered in white, fuzzy hairs and have a recognizable needle-like shape, reminding many of mountain peaks, hence the name Maofeng (Mao – fluffy, Feng – mountain peak). The color of the leaves is a very bright and vibrant green which is very pleasant to the eye. It’s important to note these visual components of Huangshan Maofeng because there are many non-genuine ones out there. Some stores sell low quality Maofeng and those leaves are usually very dark in color, removed of the white hairs, and simply do not have the aroma or taste that matches the original. You can recognize real Huangshan Maofeng by its complex and fragrant smell instantly. The color in the teapot will be a stunning yellowish green while the leaves become soft and even brighter. Upon tasting this famous green tea, a very smooth and mild flavor can be noticed, with a slight floral aftertaste. What really stands out is how refreshing this green tea is. If you’re not into strong and overwhelming flavors and aromas, this is a nice mild green tea that appeals to a very large audience.

Huangshan Maofeng tea contains a very small dose of caffeine which makes it great for anyone who wants to drink less caffeine or find an alternative to coffee. If you drink it in the morning, it will give you a much needed energy boost, but you won’t feel twitchy or over-caffeinated. Your cognitive function, focus, and concentration will improve without the negative side effects. It will also not keep you awake at night, so it’s definitely safe to drink later in the day as well.

The History of Huangshan Maofeng Leaf Green Tea

Delicious green tea
Being familiar with the history and origin of each tea we consume adds character to the tea and makes the whole experience a lot more interesting. Knowing when and how the tea came about also makes us understand and appreciate the unique flavors and aromas of the tea even more. Huangshan in the name of this tea refers to the area where it is grown and made. The mountainous Huangshan area is just perfect for growing this type of green tea. It first originated in 1875 during the ruling of the Qing Dynasty and was produced ever since. However, there is a Chinese legend that speaks about the origin of Huangshan tea. The story goes that a young tea farmer girl fell in love with a young scientist. But a local landowner had his eyes on the girl and convinced her parents to make her marry him.

The girl was devastated but had to go on with the marriage. One day, she decided to run away from her husband and meet her beloved man. She then realized that her lover has been killed by the landowner as she wept by his grave. The tears of the young girl turned into strong rain and a tea tree started growing from the grave. That tea tree was a symbol of her beloved man and their love.

How is Huangshan Maofeng Tea Made?

Huangshan mountain area is located in the famous tea producing Anhui province in China. Maofeng tea leaves are picked in early spring, right after the Qing Ming festival in April. Only two young leaves along with the bud are picked and that’s what influences the distinctive flavor of this green tea. Only tea made from young leaves is considered to be genuine Huangshan. After the leaves are handpicked, they are then withered to remove excess moisture. This tea variety is not pan-fried, but roasted in the oven. That brings the oxidation process to a stop. The roasting is a very masterful and meticulous process that has to be done just right in order for the tea to be perfect.

How To Brew Green Tea?

For the best tasting green tea, we recommend you use 2 grams of tea leaves per 6 ounces of water. If you like stronger tea, feel free to add more.

- The optimum water temperature for green tea is 160 - 170* F (70 - 80* Celsius).

- Please note that green tea leaves expand and release their flavors, so a bigger cup or strainer is recommended. Please avoid strainers and cups made of plastic materials.

- After you have boiled water and added tea leaves, let it sit in the cup / kettle for 60 seconds, then taste every 30 seconds until you find your favorite taste combination.

Should you try floral tea? Review by George Bliman

In general I don’t much care for overly floral teas, so I wasn’t hooked on this one at the start.

But since I had placed the order I decided to finish the batch, and I have to admit—it really grew on me. It’s not an overly strong tea, it seems to have a much lighter, mellower body than the comparative black teas I’ve tried and I found it very refreshing overall.

I don’t know that I would keep this one on hand all the time, but it really was a nice change of pace and I have since bought more for a friend who enjoys the same kind of light green teas similar to this one. Shipped fast, great customer service. (Posted on 9/23/2015)
Great tea, great price Review by Lauren Lauren

This is an exceptionally light and lovely green tea, which is exactly what I was looking for when I ordered it. I love green tea and all of its health benefits, but so often when I order it at a restaurant it just comes out grassy and burnt.

This one has the body of a green tea, but the taste is much more mellow, gentle, and floral than the other varieties I’ve tried purchasing. It’s a great price for a really nice product, and it shipped much more quickly than I was expecting, too—no complaints at all and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a gentle alternative to other green tea blends! A must try for all tea lovers Review by Ali

This has got to be the best smelling tea I have ever purchased! Seriously, I know that sounds weird—but you have just GOT to try this! The tea leaves are pretty and silvery before you brew them, and once you steep it for a couple of minutes it has the most beautiful floral fragrance. It’s so mellow and refreshing, and the taste is light and flowery. It’s exceptionally good over ice on a hot summer morning. I like to sip a glass sitting on my deck as I do my morning gardening—it really gets me in the mood! (Posted on 8/29/2015)
