Genmaicha Tea Introduction
Also known as Genmaicha, brown rice tea is a Japanese tea that combines green tea with roasted brown rice. This tea was originally drank by poor Japanese people who had to use rice to substitute tea, but now it’s enjoyed all over the world by all types of people.
If you’re looking for a unique tasting tea, then you should definitely try Genmaicha. The color of brown rice tea is slightly yellow and the taste is strong and nutty and combines the flavors of green tea and roasted rice. It is an interesting mix that will definitely make you want to take another sip and explore the flavor further.
This is the perfect tea for anybody who is a bit bored with regular green teas and wants something a bit more different and exotic. The rice gives that roasted smell and taste to the tea and blends really well with the bancha and sencha green leaves.
Brown rice tea is also known as “popcorn tea” because you would often get grains of rice that have popped. That adds another interesting layer to the visual side of tea, as well as its taste. It is a very fun tea to brew it because it looks unlike any other herbal teas.
The history of genmaicha tea is very interesting, as well as its journey from poor people’s tea to a beverage that is widely enjoyed all over the world. Adding roasted rice to green tea was a practical way to get the most out of your tea if you were poor and it was also a good source of nutrients which made this tea perfect for exhausted soldiers and sick people who couldn’t ingest solid food. So it was a tea and a nutritious, healing soup at the same time.
There are many stories and myths around the origin of brown rice tea, some more plausible than others, but all very fascinating. One story goes that a servant of a Japanese emperor accidentally dropped a few grains of rice into green tea and the emperor was furious and ordered the servant to be killed. But after he actually tasted the tea, he realized that it was actually quite good and in the honor of the servant, whose name was Genmai, called the tea genmaicha.
A more realistic story of the tea is that the Japanese people simply wanted to extend the life of their tea. There was an old custom of roasting a traditional Japanese rice cake around New Years and putting it into tea. Since green tea leaves didn’t last as long then because there was no refrigeration, adding roasted rice was a perfect way to enhance the flavor of old tea.
Regardless of which story is true, genmaicha tea obviously has a very long and interesting history and it has come a long way from poor people’s tea. It is now very famous all over the world, not simply because of its unique taste, but because it can do wonders for your health.
