Osmanthus Tea Introduction

Osmanthus is a delicious herbal tea that will win you over with its sweet taste and flowery smell. Tea lovers will recognize the aroma of peaches and apricots which makes this tea very fruity although it is made from the osmanthus flowers which grown on an evergreen plant. The harvest is in late autumn since the flowers bloom from September to October. Only the best flowers are picked and then set out to dry naturally, ensuring the best results. The gold colored flowers are not ground up in small pieces in order to preserve their shape as much as possible and also to maintain as much flavor and nutrients.

There are many different species of osmanthus, but the tea is made from osmanthus fragrans which means fragrant osmanthus. It is also known as guìhuā in China and mokusei in Japan. The plant is native to Asia, but can now be found all over the world as it was brought to Europe in 19th century. It also has many other uses besides making tea. Osmanthus flowers are also used for cooking, making jams, cake, soup, liquor, perfumes, and even as an insect repellent.

Osmanthus tree is found in many Chinese mythological stories which speaks a lot about how important it was for the culture. In one myth, Wu Gang, a famous character from Chinese stories, was punished and so he had to constantly chop down an osmanthus plant that was growing on the Moon and continually healing itself. It signifies an endless struggle which is very similar to the famous story of Sisyphus. The connection of osmanthus to the Moon is still observable today. Since the flowers bloom in late autumn, it was in the time of harvest which was connected to Moon and celebrated. Chinese Autumn Festival still carries on that tradition.

In another myth, osmanthus is a symbol for romance, marriage, and love, but there is still a connection to the moon. Houyi was a fearless archer who received peaches as a reward from the Queen of the Sky. The special thing about these peaches was that they give you immortality and transport you to the moon. But since Houyi loved his wife so much, he didn’t want to eat the peaches because that would mean he would have to leave her. Then a bad student of Houyi tried to steal the peaches and force the wife to give them to him. She rejected and instead ate the peaches herself. She became immortal and rose up to the moon. Houyi was devastated without his wife so the Queen of the Sky allowed them to meet up once a year under a special Osmanthus tree. That day of the year is when the aforementioned Chinese Autumn Festival is held.

Drinking this tea will only captivate you with amazing aroma and flavor, it can also transport you to an ancient and romantic mythological world where everything is possible and osmanthus grows on the moon!

A famous Chinese poet from the Tang dynasty wrote, "sweet-scented osmanthus seeds fell on the Moon as its fragrance in the sky was wafted through the clouds".
